" IDW TO PUBLISH THE MAZE AGENCY COLLECTION

by Benjamin Ong Pang Kean

According to an article on ToonZone.net, IDW Publishing will be collecting Mike W. Barr’s romantic whodunit detective comic book series, The Maze Agency, in a 156-page trade paperback in November. The TPB will retail for $24.99 and will contain the first five issues of the original series written by Barr with art by Adam Hughes and Rick Magyar, including the #0 ashcan and all the covers.

The Eisner-and Harvey-nominated The Maze Agency was originally published by Comico (and then Innovation and later moved back to Comico) in 1988 through 1991. It was last published in a three-issue limited series by Caliber Comics between 1997 and 1998.

[Note: Other titles previously published by Comico such as Matt Grendel’s Grendel and Mage have now found their respective homes with Dark Horse and Image Comics and Bill Willingham had sold off all his rights to his creation, Elementals.]

The Maze Agency tells the adventures of a romantically involved pair of private investigators: Jennifer Mays is a female private detective who runs the Maze Agency private detective firm in the city of New York and Gabriel Webb is a true crime writer and paramour of the lovely Ms. Mays.

Mike W. Barr is best known as the writer and creator of many well-known comic book series such as Camelot 3000, Batman and the Outsiders, The Outsiders and Mantra. He has written several Batman stories, most notably Batman: Son of the Demon, Batman: Reign of Terror and Batman: Year Two. While Barr’s writing in the series was top notch, also of note is the artwork by a young Adam Hughes before he became “the” Adam Hughes.

IDW has previously announced the reprints of John Ostrander and Timothy Truman’s GrimJack, Mike Grell’s Jon Sable and Mark Wheatley and Marc Hempel’s Mars as well as new mini-series/projects based on comics characters originally published by First Comics and also Anina Bennett and Paul Guinan’s Heartbreakers Meet Boilerplate."

This is great stuff. This book told great little Whodunnits. There was even a crossover with Ellery Queen in issue #9. If IDW collects all the issues I will be very happy. Rather have TPB of them then lugging them around in comic long boxes.

Now if I could get DC to do TPBs of John Ostrander's Suicide Squad stuff I would completely geek out.
Music:: The Time Warp (Remix) - Richard O'Brien, Patricia Quinn, Little Nell & Cast - The Rocky Horror Pictu

Given all the other stuff they listed as being by him, I think I'm capable of forgiving him for Mantra.

Maze Agency is by far the best stuff he ever did. His love for detective stories shine through in each story.
